Year 2: Complete
Year 2 wrapped up in November 2024 with Volume 12.5 as its final entry. It introduces a new class of first-years (Housen, Amasawa, Yagami, Nanase) and puts Ayanokoji in an increasingly difficult position as his abilities become harder to hide. Most readers consider Year 2 the strongest stretch of the series. The exam mechanics are more ambitious, the character conflicts run deeper, and Kinugasa takes bigger risks with the plot.
Seven Seas Entertainment is releasing the English translations on an ongoing schedule. If you’re reading in English, you’ll hit the translation frontier somewhere in Year 2. Year 3: Ongoing (Final Arc)
Year 3 is confirmed as the final arc. Kinugasa has stated the series will conclude with Ayanokoji’s graduation. Three volumes have been published in Japan as of this writing, starting in March 2025. The pace of publication has been roughly one volume every 2–3 months, consistent with Years 1 and 2.
No English release date has been announced for Year 3. Given that Seven Seas is still catching up on Year 2, expect a gap of at least a year before Year 3 volumes start appearing in English.
When Will Classroom of the Elite End?
Based on everything Kinugasa has said and done so far, Year 3 is the last arc. Period. He’s been consistent about that. The question is how many volumes Year 3 will run.
Year 1 took 14 books. Year 2 took 15. If Year 3 follows that pattern, we’re looking at 12-15 volumes. At Kinugasa’s pace of one volume every 2-3 months, that puts the final volume somewhere in late 2027 or early 2028. Could be sooner if Year 3 runs shorter. Nobody outside Kinugasa and his editor knows.
For English readers, add another year or more on top of that. Seven Seas is still working through Year 2 translations, so Year 3 English volumes won’t start appearing until at least late 2026.

Yes. As of March 2026, the series is actively publishing new volumes in Japan. Year 3 Volume 3 is the latest release. The publication schedule hasn’t slowed down. So if you’re checking whether CotE is dead or abandoned: no. Not even close. CotE is actively publishing in Japan right now, on the same schedule it has kept for years.
What About the Anime?
Season 4 of the anime is confirmed for April 2026. It will cover Year 2 material. Seasons 1-3 adapted Year 1 with significant changes (character swaps, cut content, reduced class sizes). The anime is not a substitute for the light novel, but Season 4 arriving means the franchise is actively continuing across both formats.
Should You Wait for It to Finish?
That depends on how you feel about ongoing series. The practical answer: Year 1 alone is a complete, self-contained arc. You can read all 14 books, reach a satisfying stopping point at Volume 11.5, and decide whether to continue into Year 2. You’re not committing to an unfinished story by starting. You’re committing to a finished first year that happens to have sequels.
Year 2 is also complete now, so you have 30 finished books before you hit anything ongoing. That’s a lot of reading. Most people who start COTE don’t stop at Year 1 anyway. The hook is real.
If you absolutely refuse to start unfinished series: wait. Year 3 will probably take another 1–2 years to complete based on Kinugasa’s pace. But 30 complete volumes is not a cliffhanger situation. You’ll have closure at the Year 1 and Year 2 boundaries even if you stop there.

And Kinugasa isn’t afraid to let his characters lose or make irreversible mistakes.
Year 1 is the strongest entry point. If Volume 1 feels slow, push through to Volume 4. That’s where the series shows its hand. By Volume 7, you’ll know whether this is for you. Year 2 ups the stakes significantly with new characters who can actually challenge the established cast.
