The thing about TanMoshi that makes the EN gap extra frustrating is that the story is genuinely good and the anime did it absolutely no favors. I watched the anime first and then I picked up volume 1 and read it in a day and then I read volume 2 and now I’m deep into the fan translations cause someone on r/LightNovels said “the LN is way better, the anime butchered it” and they were right, like completely right, and now I’m stuck waiting for Yen On to catch up to the Japanese release while knowing there are 11 volumes of story I can’t read without fan translations (which exist but the quality is, you know, variable).

MF Bunko J is clearly treating TanMoshi as one of its flagship titles, and I want to say the series had crossed two million copies in circulation back around when the anime aired, so the sales floor is there. Franchises in this position don’t really end, they sprawl, which is its own kind of problem if you like closure but that’s a different article.
Is the Story Close to Ending?
I want to say no but I honestly don’t have enough information to be confident about that. Thirteen volumes is a decent run for an MF Bunko J title and the story has been expanding in scope with each arc, introducing new characters and organizations and complications in a way that suggests nigojuu has more planned. There hasn’t been any announcement about a final arc or a volume count target, and the publication pace hasn’t slowed down, which usually means the publisher is happy with sales and the author isn’t burnt out (both good signs if you’re worried about the series getting axed or rushed to a conclusion).
The mystery structure of the series actually works in its favor here cause each arc introduces new questions while partially answering old ones, and that kind of format can sustain itself for a long time without feeling like its dragging. Compare that to something like a romance LN where you’re building toward a confession and the longer you delay it the more frustrated the audience gets. TanMoshi doesn’t have that problem cause the central mystery about Siesta and SPES and Kimitsuka’s role in all of it keeps generating new threads to pull on.

The pace has been roughly two a year since 2019 and it held even while nigojuu was writing spin-off volumes on the side, which is honestly kind of impressive, most authors slow down when the franchise work piles up. If that pace holds and the ending lands where I’m guessing, you’re looking at two or three more years of mainline volumes. I’ve made this exact kind of prediction before about other series and been wrong in both directions, so, grain of salt.
What About the Anime?
Season 1 is, I want to be diplomatic here, not good. ENGI produced it for Summer 2021 and the first episode was genuinely excellent, like the plane hijacking scene where Kimitsuka meets Siesta had people saying this was going to be anime of the season. And then episode 2 happened and then episode 3 happened and the production quality dropped so hard that someone literally found a stock PNG of a car pasted into a scene and it became a meme. The MAL score sits at 6.44 which is, for context, really damn low for a series that had this much pre-air hype.
The bigger problem than the animation quality was the adaptation structure. ENGI adapted volumes 1 through 3 but they did it out of order for some reason, rearranging the timeline in ways that confused the plot and undermined the mystery structure that makes the LN work. I know this, you probably know this if you watched it, and the r/anime community sure as hell knows this cause the show ended up on their “Least Favorite Anime” poll which is not where you want your series to be.
Season 2 is confirmed for Fall 2026 with ENGI returning. I have mixed feelings about ENGI coming back (on the one hand they know the material now, on the other hand they’re the ones who messed it up the first time) but the source material from volume 4 onward is strong and if they can keep the production quality consistent and adapt in order this time there’s a real chance at a redemption arc. Whether that actually happens is anyone’s guess.
Small thing, but the Season 2 announcement art looked promising. Then again announcement art always looks promising, thats literally its job, and I got fooled by exactly this in 2021. Cautious optimism, emphasis on cautious.
Should You Start Reading?
The honest answer is yes with a caveat. The LN is significantly better than the anime suggests and I genuinely think TanMoshi is one of the more underrated series in the medium right now, buried under the weight of its own terrible adaptation. The mystery-romance-supernatural blend is unique, Siesta is a fantastic character even in death (especially in death, honestly), and the past-present timeline structure gives the story an emotional texture that most LNs in this space don’t attempt.
The caveat is the EN release situation. Two volumes is not a lot to work with and Yen On’s pace means you’re either committing to fan translations for volumes 3 through 13 or you’re committing to a wait that could take years. Neither option is ideal. If you read Japanese or don’t mind fan translations you’re in good shape cause there’s 13 volumes of content waiting for you. If you’re EN-only and want to read official translations, you might want to wait until Yen On has at least 5 or 6 volumes out before jumping in (though I’ll be honest I said that to myself and then read the fan translations anyway cause I have no self-control when it comes to mystery series).
If your plan is to read ahead of Season 2 before October: S2 starts from volume 4, so being through volume 3 means episode one of the new season lands on fresh story for you instead of a recap of stuff you already know. The problem, and you can probably see it coming, is that official English stops at volume 2. So EN-only readers can get two-thirds of the way to the S2 starting line legitimately and then have to either stop or go the fan translation route for volume 3. Its a genuinely annoying place for the license to be sitting, one volume short of the thing the marketing calendar actually needs.
