TL;DR
- Yes, the main series is finished. Mushoku Tensei ran 26 volumes. All are available in English from Seven Seas Entertainment. The story is complete with a definitive ending — no cliffhangers.
- The web novel is also finished. It completed in 2015. The light novel (the definitive version) finished in November 2022.
- Still publishing: Mushoku Tensei: Redundancy (side stories, 5 vols) and a manga adaptation are ongoing. A sequel series has been announced but hasn’t started.
- Start reading now? Yes — you can read the full 26-volume story without waiting. See our reading order guide.
But “finished” gets complicated when you look at the full picture, because there are spinoffs, a sequel setup, and an ongoing manga adaptation that all exist alongside the completed main series. Here’s what’s actually done, what’s still publishing, and what’s coming next.
More about Mushoku Tensei
The Main Series: 26 Volumes, Complete

Rifujin na Magonote’s original Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation light novel ran from January 2014 to November 2022 in Japan. Seven Seas Entertainment published the English translations under their Airship imprint, with Volume 26 releasing in English in late 2024.
The story follows Rudeus Greyrat from birth through the end of his life. Volume 24 resolves the main conflict. Volumes 25 and 26 are epilogue chapters. The ending is conclusive. There are no cliffhangers, no unresolved plot threads that require a sequel to close. Rudeus’s story is told in full.
If you’re considering starting the series, this is a genuine advantage. I wish Re:Zero had this — I’m still waiting on that one. A lot of popular light novels are still running (Re:Zero is on Volume 37 with no end in sight, Classroom of the Elite just finished at 31 volumes). Mushoku Tensei gives you the whole thing. You can read from Volume 1 to Volume 26 and get a complete arc with a planned ending.
The Web Novel vs. the Light Novel
The web novel came first. Rifujin na Magonote posted it on Shosetsuka ni Narou from 2012 to 2015. It’s also complete. But the light novel is the definitive version. It’s revised, expanded, better paced. The community treats the LN as canon. Some arcs play out differently between the two versions, and the LN adds scenes that the web novel didn’t have.
If someone tells you Mushoku Tensei finished in 2015, they’re talking about the web novel. The light novel finished in 2022. Read the light novel.
Redundant Reincarnation (The Side Stories)
After the main series ended, Rifujin na Magonote published Redundant Reincarnation, a collection of side stories set within the timeline of the main 26 volumes. These aren’t a sequel. They fill gaps: Eris’s training arc while she was away from Rudeus, Roxy’s perspective during key events, backstory for supporting characters.
Three Redundant Reincarnation volumes are out in English through Seven Seas as of early 2026. A fourth is expected. The fandom calls these “Redundancy” for short.
Are they essential? No. The main series is self-contained. But the Eris chapters address the biggest gap in the main narrative (her growth happening entirely offscreen between Volumes 6 and 15), and the community rates some of these stories higher than chunks of the main series.
Jobless Oblige (The Sequel Bridge)
Jobless Oblige is a related spinoff that follows Rudeus’s descendants. It continues the larger Hitogami/Laplace War arc that the main series set up but deliberately left for a future story. This is still publishing in Japan.
Rifujin na Magonote has confirmed plans for a full sequel series with Lara (Rudeus and Sylphie’s daughter) as the protagonist. The Redundancy volumes and Jobless Oblige are the bridge to that story. No release timeline for the sequel has been announced.
So while Rudeus’s story is complete, the world of Mushoku Tensei is not done. If you finish all 26 volumes and want more, there’s a path forward. But you’re not waiting on anything to get the complete Rudeus experience.
The Manga: Still Ongoing
The Mushoku Tensei manga adaptation is still publishing. It’s well behind the light novel in terms of story coverage and won’t be complete for years. If you want the full story now, the light novel is the only way to get it.
There’s also Mushoku Tensei: Roxy Gets Serious, a manga spinoff focused on Roxy’s life before meeting Rudeus. It’s separate from the main story and licensed by Seven Seas.
The Anime: Where It Stands
Studio Bind’s anime adaptation has covered roughly Volumes 1 through 6 across two seasons and OVAs. That’s less than a quarter of the total story. Season 3 has been announced. At the current adaptation pace, the anime would need several more seasons to reach the ending.
If you watched the anime and want to know how it ends: the light novel is the answer. Starting from Volume 7 picks up where Season 2 left off, though starting from Volume 1 gives you the full experience (the anime cuts about 30-40% of Rudeus’s internal monologue, which changes the reading experience significantly). For a detailed breakdown of what the anime changes, see our Mushoku Tensei LN vs anime comparison.
How Many Volumes Is Mushoku Tensei?

- Redundant Reincarnation: 3 volumes in English, 4th expected (side stories, ongoing)
- Jobless Oblige: publishing in Japan, not yet licensed in English (sequel bridge)
- Roxy Gets Serious manga: 12+ volumes (separate spinoff)
- Main manga adaptation: ongoing
The 26 main volumes are the core experience. Everything else is supplementary. For a full review of the series, see our Mushoku Tensei light novel review.
